I use an integrative approach to therapy, with Person-Centered therapy at the foundation.
I might incorporate the following modalities in our work together:
Person-Centered Therapy
The idea behind Person-centered therapy is that humans have a drive to work towards being their best selves and are constantly striving to do so. Person-Centered counseling is a non-directive approach and places emphasis on the individual being the expert in their life. I will allow you to lead and guide your exploration of your growth and self-actualization by providing a comfortable and non-judgmental environment so you can get to where you want to be.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is the belief that our thoughts affect the way we feel and behave. CBT aims to identify automatic thoughts, including negative thinking patterns and common thinking errors that can lead to maladaptive functioning and reframes these thoughts into positive, productive thoughts, thus changing the way feel and behave. Client feedback of CBT is that it is a “user friendly” approach with easy-to-understand concepts. I enjoy giving individuals and families concrete steps to work towards managing mental health symptoms both in-session and at home.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT was developed to work with suicidal and self-harm behaviors, but now is applied to a variety of mental health issues. DBT teaches skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation and interpersonal effectiveness to reduce unhealthy coping and replace with healthy coping skills. Similarly to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, DBT also addresses negative thinking patterns that lead to maladaptive behavior.
Play Therapy
Play therapy is a non-directive approach used with children typically up to age 12. Play is often described as children’s natural language, as they lack the brain maturity to fully communicate in words their experiences. Play is used in the therapy session to enhance the child’s ability to communicate what they are struggling with and make connections that are developmentally appropriate. The items in my playroom are carefully chosen to promote expression of common childhood problems.
Art Therapy
Sometimes verbal expression can be difficult, and art therapy provides a means for more unrestricted expression by utilizing various art mediums. I have a range of materials such as collage materials, drawing supplies, clay, and crafting materials readily accessible to encourage artistic self-expression.
